Steve Cunningham, MAExecutive DirectorSteve.Cunningham@PivotPoint.ca Steve is the founder and Executive Director of Pivot Point Family Growth Centre Inc. Click the link below to read more about WHY Steve started Pivot Point and discover what’s behind the name. Read MoreCloseI was raised in Vancouver, BC by a caring family, but I really struggled with the divorce and break up of that family when I was 9 years old. I made a few bad choices, and was running with a rather destructive group of kids. However, in the summers that followed, I went to Summer Camps where I discovered the power of positive role models… something I’d been craving throughout my first decade of life. I met older teens and young men in their early 20’s who lived with playfulness, courage and passion. They made learning fun, and invited me to try new things like canoeing, rock climbing, and building campfires… their belief in me sparked a turning point in my young life: I knew I wanted to be like them when I grew up! I knew I wanted a better future! So by age 15 I was working at that camp as a Counsellor-in-Training. By 17 I was a counsellor, and leading cabin groups. I remember doing an activity where the counsellor would sit one-to-one with each camper and talk about home life, school life, and friends… then set goals for each. I was shocked to see that nearly every one of those 8 or 9 year old boys ended up crying as they shared about their Home/School/Family life back in the city. They were all struggling so much with their young lives! One day, I was telling one of my young campers about the great things I saw in him, and how I believed in who he could become… and the spark returned to his tear filled eyes! That’s when it hit me that I had become that same role model from 7 years earlier! Camp created a turning point for me, and by age 17 I was doing that for others. I’ve worked with children and their families for over thirty years since then, in various roles such Child Care Worker, Special Education Teaching Assistant, Respite Care Provider, Foster Parent and now I am a Clinical Counsellor specializing in Diverse Abilities of childhood. But throughout it all, I have been focused on that same powerful feeling… that “WOOSH!” of excitement that emanates from the core of my being when someone else discovers or creates their own turning point in life; when they shift back into alignment with their best and positive future. That is why I created “Pivot Point”… a company dedicated to seeking and supporting that positive shift in others; In our clients, in our staff, and in our community partners. My degrees in psychology from Simon Fraser University, and a Masters of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University, may have added some clinical training to my decades of direct experience working with children… but really, whether it’s supporting families or managing Pivot Point’s staff, it has always come down to a matter of heart. I simply believe that at times, we all need others who can be playful with us; and we all need others to share their passions, to inspire our courage, and to invite us to believe in something better for ourselves. I hope we can share this kind of meaningful relationship with every family we serve. I hope our charismatic energy and sound clinical practices create a powerful force for positive change in the lives of everyone we meet. I hope we can all eventually find a turning point in our lives… one that brings us back into alignment with our best possible futures, and one that inspires us to share that magic with others!

Alex Delange, M.Sc., BCBAABA Program Manager, Clinical Supervisor & Behaviour ConsultantRegion: All RegionsAlex.Delange@PivotPoint.ca I have over 25 years of experience working directly with children with special needs. I started my career in community recreation, and started a program to address physical activity for children with special needs. I began working as a Behaviour Interventionist (BI) in home intervention programs and decided to pursue Behaviour Consultation certification as I discovered my passion for teaching children who required specialized learning techniques. Read MoreCloseI became a Behaviour Consultant in 2009, becoming a Board Certified Assistant Behaviour Analyst in 2011. Most recently, I have completed my Master’s Degree in Psychology, with specialization in ABA. My primary area of experience is in working with children aged 3 to 12 years old, however I do also serve teen and adults. I use multiple ABA teaching methods to develop independence and promote positive behaviours. I use the Verbal Behaviour approach to language development, and Natural Environment Teaching to promote socialization and play and am experienced in teaching children to communicate using picture symbols, using visual supports and developing language based on motivation and enjoyment of activities. So much learning happens outside of the therapy room and so I feel it is important to work with families to incorporate ABA at home in easy, everyday interactions. A personalized ABA program combines teaching techniques which are the most effective for your child and which are the most comfortable for your family. I look to research and experience to inform my advice and recommendations so we can have a discussion about which way to go and what you are comfortable with I believe that respectful and genuine collaboration is an integral part of working with your child and your family. As the parent, you are the expert in your child and I see my role as one to work alongside of you as you help your child be the happiest they can be. Your child’ schools and community partners will also be invited to be a part of the collaborative team which helps ensure that everyone who has an important role in your child’s development can use their expertise and knowledge. Whether that is by learning to communicate, learning to be more social and flexible, or just learning how to make friends, and do better in school, my approach is one of patience, knowledge and understanding to help your child shine.

Alex Delange, MSc., BCBAABA Program Manager, Behaviour Consultant & CSup.View Early Intervention and School Age Services Program PagesAlex.Delange@PivotPoint.ca I have over 25 years of experience working directly with children with special needs.

Sandra HaukelandTeen Transition and Adult Services Program ManagerSandra.Haukeland@PivotPoint.ca Sandra knew from a young age that working to help others was her calling. She believes that EVERYONE should be treated with kindness, dignity, and equality and that both nature and nurture contribute to a person’s identity. Read MoreClosePrior to becoming a teacher in her early 20’s, Sandra worked at daycare centres and camps. Her passion for supporting children to reach their goals and to work towards becoming the best versions of themselves was her drive. During this time, she also learned a valuable lesson; “I learned that helping/teaching others is not something that should be done to another person, it should be done with them. When you work with someone, then they want to learn, they are participating in their learning. At that point, it becomes easy as everything else falls into place”.
Life later led Sandra to live in Alberta for several years where she worked with neuro-diverse groups, and home-school groups and also privately tutored neurodiverse and behaviourally challenged students, providing the extra support they required to achieve graduation. Then, upon her return to BC, Sandra worked as an Executive Assistant for the Director of Health and the Director of the Early Childhood Department for a local First Nations Band. She considers this one of her most valuable experiences as she not only learned so much about the intricate workings of healthcare and management, but was gifted the opportunity to witness and often even participate in the many cultural events and celebrations unique to this Band. She cherishes the many memories and friendships she has from this time. With a BA in English Literature and Early Childhood Education and many other Educational and Crisis Intervention certifications, Sandra is excited to lead her team of professionals to ensure the individuals and families they support find their dreams and goals. Encouraging the passions and celebrating the successes of staff and persons served alike. She consciously works hard to remain accessible and approachable. In her downtime, Sandra enjoys spending time with her husband and dog while camping, looking after their home and spending time with friends. She is fiercely proud of her two daughters who are both attending university and are also pursuing careers in the Human Services sector. Sandra is a bit of an animal nut and loves her coffee!
